Speaking Volumes

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:1-5

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. Hebrews 1:1-4

INSIGHT

God, will you speak to me? Lord, why are you so silent...why can't I hear your voice?

Raise your hand if you've ever cried out in a moment of desperation and asked those questions. You sir, in the back, the one with their hand down, yeah...you're not fooling anyone.

At one time or another, we've all said those words. We've desired clarity for our circumstances, direction for our next steps, or reassurance for our confused souls. Sometimes, it feels like God suddenly goes silent, and when we find ourselves in that place, His silence feels deafening.

But, God's not muted, reserved, or distant. He speaks and has spoken.

God wants us to know Him, trust Him, love Him, and follow Him. And, to accomplish that end, God spoke definitively through His Son. Jesus serves as the final word of God’s love for humanity.

Do you want to know what God's character is like? Pay attention to Jesus. Do you yearn to understand your purpose and what God desires for your life? Look to Jesus. Do you hope to comprehend the broken world you call home and the part you play in fixing it? Pursue Jesus. Do you need to understand the depths of your heart, and what drives your motives and actions? Learn from Jesus.

We perceive the Word of God by tuning our ears to His Son.

When we listen to Jesus, we hear God. By studying His life, His teachings, and His actions, we carry on the conversation. The growth we long for doesn't happen through a quick word. It requires us to slow down and repeatedly listen until those words transform us from the inside out.

REFLECTION

  • Where do you need to hear God's voice?

  • How could listening to and looking towards Jesus provide you with guidance and direction for your circumstances?

PRAYER

God, thank you for speaking volumes about who You are through the life of Christ. By looking to Him, I see You. What I encounter is unconditional love, radical forgiveness, and life-changing restoration. May I tune my ears to the places where You are speaking into my world. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
