CHANGE FOR CHANGE is a tangible way for kids to develop a heart for others and put their faith into action. Throughout the month of October, Port City Kids will be learning what it looks like to share the gospel and practically love those who are in need.
This year our Wilmington and Leland campuses are partnering with Vigilant Hope to purchase tents for our friends that are unsheltered. New Bern will be raising money for a local Special Needs Baseball organization.
Throughout the month, we are encouraging families at our Wilmington and Leland Campuses to do 3 things:
Raise money as a family!
Encourage you kids to get creative with this! They could have a bake sale in your neighborhood, host a yard sale, set up a lemonade (or Hot Chocolate) stand, help a neighbor with yard work, give away a portion of their allowance, etc.
Serve with Vigilant Hope!
There are 2 opportunities EVERY WEEK to serve with Vigilant Hope. No need to register just show up ready to love on the people you are with!
Saturday’s from 8-10am 1626 Lake Branch Dr (show up, eat breakfast, be relational and play BINGO)
Thursday’s from 6-7:30pm 20 S. 16th St (bring a dish, eat dinner, be relational)
Sleep in a tent one night!
Look over your calendar and pick a night as a family to sleep in a tent together. This is meant to be fun, but educational as well. Use the ideas below to talk with your kids about what it would be like to sleep in a tent every night.
Ask your kids what they think it means to be homeless.
People are at-risk of homelessness when their housing is unaffordable, unsafe, overcrowded, insecure, inappropriate, or poorly maintained, and when they lack the
support necessary to maintain stability in their lives.
People experience hidden homelessness when they are living in temporary accommodations such as with family or friends.
People experience absolute homelessness when they are staying in emergency shelters or sleeping in places not intended for livings (i.e., in cars, on streets, under bridges).
Ask your kids some of the following questions:
What kind of things do you do each morning to get ready for the day?
What kind of things do you like to do at your house?
How would those things look different if we didn’t have our home?
Do you know any organizations in our community that help people who may be facing homelessness?
How would you feel if you didn’t have a home to live in?
How would you want others to help you if you didn’t have a home to live in?
Pray for those in our community who are experiencing homelessness.
