Wordless Groans

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

Insight

We've all had moments when we're left speechless.

A groom catches a glimpse of his bride walking down the aisle.

A parent hears their newborn's first cry.

A child gets news of a loved one passing away.

A student gains acceptance into their dream school.

A broken marriage. A lost job. A grim medical prognosis.

The weight of the circumstances keeps us tongue-tied. Trying to articulate the flood of emotions that fill our hearts is an exercise in futility. Nothing we say will do justice to how we feel.

In times of trouble and moments of joy, God invites us to come to Him.

It's not about the conversation but rather the connection and communion. So the agenda for gathering isn't about our requests, but the relationship.

God knows what we need. So, we don't need to concern ourselves with the eloquence of our speech. The only words we need don't even come from us; they come from God:

"I know. I understand. I'm here. I love you."

Our words may fail us, but God never does.

Reflection

  • Where do words fall short in trying to express the current state of your heart?

Prayer

God, Your love leaves me speechless. No matter what I face, I am never alone. You are always by my side. When all I can utter is nothing more than a groan, You respond with understanding and compassion. May I come to You with everything, for You care about the condition of my heart. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
