Undisturbed

The Lord's justice will dwell in the desert, his righteousness live in the fertile field.

The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.

My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. Isaiah 32:16-18

Insight

Peaceful. Secure. Undisturbed.

We're all friends here, so let's be honest. Those words don't describe my house, and chances are good; they stand in stark contrast to what's happening under your roof right now.

Noisy. Unsettled. Agitated.

I could think of some other choice descriptors, but those will have to do. As I give those adjectives a second glance, I see that they don't just detail the disruptions happening around me, but also the discord taking place within me.

So, what came first? Did my circumstances create the chaos, or did inner strife influence and impact my surroundings?

Rather than point a finger, I need to look in the mirror. I might not have a say in what happens to me, but I have the final word on what transpires within me.

In the desert. In the fertile land.

Today's passage reminds us that God's presence resides in both. His love and mercy dwell in the good as well in the bad. Whether sunny skies or grey clouds, He is still faithful. The contentment we crave doesn't lie in a place just out of reach; it resides in someone right by our side. What are we promised when we take our eyes off our circumstances and keep them focused on Christ?

Peace. Quietness. Confidence.

Reflection

  • Where does your heart remain unsettled? How is what's happening inside of you influencing your response to what's happening around you?

  • How do you think God feels about how you react to your circumstances?

Prayer

God, may I pay attention to the condition of my heart and address the places that have become fearful, jaded, or discouraged. While uncertainty occurs around me, let me display the confidence that Your love remains the same. Settle my spirit and quiet my soul. I will place my trust in You rather than my circumstances for You never fail me. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
