Throw Your Net

To reflect God’s heart to the world around us, we need to know God’s heart and, we believe, God’s heart is most clearly represented in Jesus. In the weeks leading up to Easter, we invite you to explore the life of Jesus by reading the Gospel of John with us. As we delve into the richness of scripture, we’ll utilize the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, which invites us to slow down and posture our hearts to hear from God. With that said, let’s begin with a prayer.

Open your time by reciting these words:

Lord, as I approach scripture, prepare my heart to encounter You in its pages. Quiet the distractions that pull me away and open my eyes to see Your truth. May I encounter these words humbly, with an open mind and a receptive spirit. May my time in Scripture be a sacred encounter that deepens my relationship with You and transforms me into the image of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lectio (Reading)

Take a moment to read John 21:1-14 slowly and attentively. As you read, pay attention to any words or phrases that stand out to you. Allow the text to wash over you, inviting the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. John 21:4-6

Meditatio (Meditation)

In the stillness of the morning, as the sun began to cast its reflection across the Sea of Galilee, a group of weary fishermen found themselves grappling with the aftermath of a long night's toil. Their nets, heavy with disappointment, hung limp from weathered hands. Each cast had yielded little, if anything at all, and the dawn brought with it a sense of weariness and uncertainty. Yet, it was in their exhaustion and discouragement that Jesus chose to reveal Himself once more to His disciples. As they stood by the shore, disheartened by their meager catch, a figure appeared in the distance. Though they did not recognize Him at first, His voice cut through the early morning haze, calling out to them, "Friends, do you have any fish?"

The disciples, unaware of the identity of the speaker, replied with a simple "No." Little did they know that the one who stood before them was the very Lord they had followed, the one who had performed miracles and shared meals with them. In their weariness and disillusionment, they failed to see Him for who He truly was. Yet, undeterred by their lack of recognition, Jesus instructed them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat. And as they obeyed His command, they were met with a sight beyond their wildest imagination – a multitude of fish thrashing in the nets, so numerous that they struggled to haul them aboard.

Upon reaching the shore, they find Jesus already preparing breakfast—a charcoal fire with fish and bread. Here, Jesus once again invites them to participate in the meal, mirroring the intimate moments shared during His earthly ministry. The aroma of the fire, the sizzle of the fish, the warmth of fellowship—these sensory details paint a vivid picture of communion with the risen Lord. The disciples are struck by a sense of déjà vu as they recognize Jesus' miraculous provision. The breakfast on the shore becomes a sacred meal, where bread and fish symbolize sustenance for body and soul. It's a foretaste of the heavenly banquet awaiting believers—a feast where Christ Himself is the host, satisfying our deepest hunger.

Take a moment to consider what you just read. Consider the context and the emotions of the disciples as they fish all night without success, only to be met by Jesus instructing them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Ponder how obedience to Christ's command led to abundance.

Contemplatio (Contemplation)

Moreover, this passage reminds us of the importance of recognizing the presence of Jesus in our midst, even when He appears in unexpected forms. Just as the disciples initially failed to recognize Him standing on the shore, so too do we often overlook His presence in the ordinary moments of our lives – in the beauty of creation, the kindness of strangers, and the quiet whispers of our hearts. Yet, when we open our eyes and hearts to His presence, we are met with His unfailing love and provision, ready to sustain us through every trial and tribulation. For He is the one who stands at the shore of our lives, beckoning us to cast our nets into the depths of His grace and mercy, where we will find an abundance beyond measure. In Him, we lack nothing. When we surrender our efforts and obedience to His will a miraculous catch awaits us, for His grace is sufficient for all our needs.

Take a moment to reflect on moments when you felt the presence of Jesus in unexpected forms. How did they remind you of God's unfailing love and provision?  Thank God for His presence in your life, even in the ordinary moments, and express your gratitude for His abundant grace and mercy.

Actio (Action)

In this miraculous catch, we witness the abundant provision of God amid our inadequacy and despair. Just as the disciples had labored in vain throughout the night, so too do we often find ourselves striving fruitlessly in our own strength, grasping at success and fulfillment but coming up empty-handed. But it is precisely in these moments of emptiness that Jesus invites us to cast our nets once more – not in our own wisdom or strength, but in obedience to His word. For His ways are higher than ours, and His provision knows no bounds. When we surrender our efforts and trust in His guidance, He reveals the abundance of His grace and mercy, overflowing into every aspect of our lives.

Take a moment to consider areas in your life where you need to step out in obedience, trusting in God's provision and abundance.

Oratio (Prayer)

Close your time by reciting this prayer or lifting up your own:

Lord Jesus, in the midst of my daily routines and mundane tasks, help me to recognize Your presence and hear Your voice. Like the disciples by the sea, may I experience Your miraculous provision and abundant grace in my life. Grant me the courage to follow You wholeheartedly, trusting in Your love and guidance every step of the way. Amen.
