Quarantine Fever

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8

Insight

It feels as if the walls are closing in on me. I've lost track of the days. I'm pretty sure it's Thursday, but one can't be sure.

Like most parents right now, I'm going a bit stir crazy. I have always believed teachers were unappreciated and needed a pay raise, but after becoming the "headmaster" of my kids’ online school over these past few weeks, I'm now nominating every educator for sainthood.

Quarantine fever has officially taken over our household. If you're reading this, please send rations our way, especially toilet paper and hand sanitizer. We've blown through our cereal, eggs, soups, and bread (and all of our junk food).

All kidding aside, feelings of restlessness have set in and are taking their toll. You can only play so many card games, read so many books, binge watch so many Netflix shows, and do so much laundry, before you slowly lose your ever-loving mind.

Being in close quarters has everyone on edge, with grumbling, disagreements, and bickering breaking out. I keep reminding myself that this too will pass. As soon as we get back to our typical routine, these feelings will quickly subside.

If a heart remains unsettled for too long, it begins to lose its balance. Not only does this restlessness damage our hearts, but it cripples our faith. We lose hope and wrestle with the temptation to stop short of the transformation that comes by walking in confidence through our circumstances.

Restlessness takes its toll on our mindset and perspective, as well as our relationships. Failing to address the symptoms only exasperates the problem.

When we can't find peace, when God feels distant, when we are unable to shake feelings that something is missing or needs to change, we must pay attention. Rather than resist, we should lean in and be curious.

Restlessness serves as an invitation to seek His presence and perspective. He uses our unsettled heart to teach us more about the condition of our heart as well as His faithfulness. Only God knows what drives our discontentment. If we're willing to trust Him, on the other side of our restlessness is a peace that passes all understanding.

Reflection

  • Where are you experiencing a bit of restlessness? What is driving this reaction?

  • What is God trying to teach you through your unsettled heart?

Prayer

God, bring light to the places where my heart remains restless. Let me have the courage to confess where I am discontent, distracted or distant. Help me to trust that contentment is only found through pursuing You with my whole heart. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
