Horizon

Psalm 105:4-5 (NLT)

Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him.

Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given.

Isaiah 40:26 (NLT)

Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars?

He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name.

Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.

Insight

After quite a bit of reflection and journaling, I landed on Horizon as My One Word for 2022. I caught an image of the place where heaven and earth intersect and the beauty that’s on full display with this meeting. I thought of sunrises and how it seems to begin at one point and suddenly the whole sky is on fire with beauty as the light extends along the horizon.

This horizon line extends, wrapping beyond my field of vision. It struck me deeply, how life with God changes the way I see everything and extends outward into my relationship with others – beyond what I could ever imagine.

Through the year, God reminded me to fix my eyes upward and outward so that my vision would be filled with the wonder and beauty of what He is continuously doing. I had a renewed vision of how God was working in my life, while also seeing the opportunities He has given me to invest in others. I sought out opportunities to spend time with friends, to grow relationships, and to invest in my family.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Summer Sabbath series because I intentionally slowed down and meditated on the Psalms to soak in His word. I also had more time with my kids during this same season because they were on Summer Break. I became more aware of how God is growing them and was able to see in fresh ways just how incredible they are!

God broadened my horizon this past year as I was reminded of my personal limits and perceptions. I was stretched with more opportunities to move beyond my comfort zone. I was fully content in my professional life and God stirred my heart to pursue a new opportunity, which led to a change in my position at Port City. I definitely didn’t see that one coming at the beginning of 2022!

As God grew my vision of who He is and what He is doing, He increased my heart for others. More than anything, I grew in wonder and awe of who God is and how He is moving in my life and the lives of those around me. Even as I move into 2023, I want to keep this wonder and the habit of looking to the horizon, wondering with genuine curiosity, “What’s next?”

Reflection

  • How would you describe the next step of faith God is urging you to take?

  • What emotions do you feel when you look to the horizon of the year to come?

Prayer

God, opportunities to grow and be used are all around me - only if I take notice and look for them. May I look for ways You are moving around me and help me to respond with humility, faith, and courage. Expand my vision for Your Kingdom by keeping my eyes focused on You. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
