Embrace Humility

Welcome to our "Finding Fullness" devotional series, a transformative two-week journey where we'll delve into the heart of the abundant life that Christ offers us. During our time together, we'll explore a collection of scriptures illuminating the path to embracing Christ's love, grace, and purpose. As Christ's followers, it's essential we not only understand these foundational truths intellectually but also trust them in our hearts and live them out in our daily lives.

In a world often enamored with self-promotion and personal gain, embracing humility through the lens of Jesus challenges us to live counter-culturally. By imitating His humility, we open ourselves to deeper relationships, authentic community, and a life aligned with the purpose God has for us. With this in mind, we invite you to read Philippians 2:3-11. As you do, pay attention and note any words, phrases, or themes that stand out to you.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:3-11

This verse is like a treasure chest filled with wisdom, offering us a roadmap to embracing humility and putting others first. At the heart of Jesus Christ's teachings and example lies the essence of humility. His entire life radiated a profound embodiment of this virtue. Born in a humble stable, He chose a life of simplicity and servanthood. Jesus, the King of kings, washed the feet of His disciples, demonstrating that true greatness is found in serving others.

In Philippians 2:5-8, the apostle Paul paints a vivid portrait of Christ's humility, stating that He "emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant." Jesus willingly took on the form of a lowly human, foregoing His rights for the sake of humanity's redemption. The cross stands as the pinnacle of this humility. Christ's sacrificial death, bearing the weight of humanity's sin, showcases the depth of His love and humility. The Creator endured the ultimate humiliation to reconcile us to Himself.

Jesus invites us to follow His example, to take up the posture of a servant, and to prioritize others' well-being above our own desires. Humility, as illuminated by Christ, is not weakness but strength under control—a willingness to lay aside our ego for the sake of God's kingdom and the welfare of others. It's an internal transformation that leads to external acts of love and compassion. Humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it's thinking of yourself less. It's not about denying your worth but recognizing that everyone around you carries inherent value too.

Take a moment and consider:

  • Embrace True Humility - Take a moment to reflect on your past interactions. Were there times when you could have chosen humility but didn't? Write down your thoughts – this is your first step towards growth.

  • Practice Empathy - Empathy is a superpower that humility activates. It's putting yourself in another person's shoes and feeling what they feel. Think of a friend going through a tough time. How could you step into their world and offer support?

  • Cultivate Gratitude - Gratitude is the antidote to selfishness. When we recognize the blessings we have, it's easier to share them with others. Take a moment to list five things you're grateful for. How could you use these blessings to bless others?

  • Start Small, Start Now - Change doesn't happen overnight, but it starts with one intentional step. Think of a practical scenario where you can put someone else's needs before your own. Write down your commitment and hold yourself accountable to it.

Embracing humility and putting others first isn't a one-time task. It's a lifelong pursuit that transforms us from the inside out. So, whenever you're faced with a choice between selfishness and humility, remember the words of Philippians 2, and let them guide you towards a life of greater love, compassion, and connection.

Close your time with this prayer:

God, as we contemplate the humility displayed by Jesus Christ, our hearts are humbled in His presence. Thank you for the perfect example of selfless love He embodied. May we, too, be transformed by His humility, choosing to serve and love others above ourselves. Grant us the strength to lay aside our ego, embracing the path of humility that leads us closer to You and the heart of Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
