Christmas Masterpiece
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. Colossians 1:15-16
INSIGHT
When our kids were younger, our fridge became a winter wonderland decked with jolly art. From glittery ornaments to handprint reindeer, these masterpieces were like little treasures. Displaying them brought us (and them) a daily dose of holiday happiness.
Our girls would come home from school, often covered in glitter and paint, excited to show us their latest holiday masterpiece, then plead with us to find real estate on the fridge to display it.
A sense of pride comes with creating something, and that pride continues to grow when someone else appreciates it. The fact that we placed their paintings and collages for all to see made them feel extra special.
How often are we captivated by the work of someone else? A beautiful painting, a captivating book, or a stunning photograph that stuck with you. Each piece gave you a glimpse into the heart of the creator. But, take it a step further and think about those things that no human hands could create - the deep green of lush grass and colorful flowers that cover a hillside, the reds and oranges contained in a beach sunrise, or the awe that towering mountains can instill in our hearts.
God is indeed the Master Artist, and Scripture says that YOU are His masterpiece. It's no accident that you exist; God created you with thought, purpose, and intention. You're unique and one of a kind. You're a piece of art that God takes pride in. Like me, you probably struggle to think of yourself that way, especially with how messy our lives can be. But, like a skillful artist, God's grace, love, forgiveness, and redemption have the power to make a masterpiece out of your mess.
Let this reality deeply penetrate your heart. If you're still struggling to embrace this truth, consider the chaos Jesus found Himself in when He entered our world. Jesus entered a messy world and lived among the messiness of other people. When His mission was complete, Jesus messily left this world on a cross and, eventually, an empty grave.
Nevertheless, throughout it all, we witness how Jesus transformed the disorder around Him into works of art. Everyone who encountered Jesus had the privilege of seeing their Creator, who intricately designed every aspect of their being. How could anyone remain unchanged after such an encounter?
The realization that God is the Creator of all things changes everything for us. It serves as a reminder that, no matter how chaotic things may appear, we are like a blank canvas. Each day and every moment offers an opportunity for God to craft our lives into the masterpieces He envisions for us.
REFLECTION
You are God's masterpiece. What emotions does a statement like that evoke for you?
How difficult is it to see how God can take those messes and continue to shape you into the masterpiece He created you to be?
PRAYER
Father, thank you for being the Master Artist. You use each moment as a brush stroke, and You shape all things to work for a greater purpose. Help me to see You working at all times and not to lose hope when life gets messy. Thank You for loving me so well. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
