Christmas Catalog

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:2,6

INSIGHT

Before Amazon wish lists or pinning ideas to your Pinterest boards, there was the Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog. Every holiday season my mom would plop it down on the kitchen table, hand me a pen and tell me to "have fun."  I would then start circling practically every toy in sight to the point I'd get carpal tunnel syndrome. Even though I knew only a few presents would make their way under the tree, it was still fun to fill my heart with hopes, dreams, and wonder.

Now, being a parent myself, it brings me great joy when my daughters tear open a gift. Their faces light up, and they shriek with joy when getting something they desperately wanted. Many of us go all out trying to find the perfect present for our loved ones.

During Christmas, we celebrate the first gift exchange that took place. Yes, the wise men brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to celebrate Jesus’ arrival, but we need to remember these weren't the first gifts handed out; it was the gift of the Child.

For unto us a Child was born, and a Son given. God knew of humanity's highest hopes, desires, and wants, and He delivered the perfect gift, wrapped in swaddling clothes. God's gift to us was Himself. He entered our mess and caused a beautiful disruption that altered the way we connect with our Creator. Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving. He's our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Each of these names of Jesus can be viewed as a gift in and of themselves.

Wonderful Counselor. When we reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf, a sense of awe and wonder should take over our hearts. He came not only to provide us with life down the road but to direct our days right here and right now. He provides us with wisdom, insight, and direction.

Mighty God.  Not only can we look to Him during moments of uncertainty, adversity, and sorrow for guidance, we are to lean on His strength when we find ourselves at the end of our rope. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Everlasting Father. The heart of God is the heart of a father. He wants what is best for us. He is in our corner and always on our side. He wants us to come to Him with our fears, our hopes, our insecurities, and our dreams. He wipes away every tear, sits with us in our sorrow, and celebrates our growth.

Prince of Peace. The only certainty in life is its uncertainty. Building our foundation on Him enables us to stand firm in the face of any trials. No matter our circumstances, unshakeable peace and an inner calm can define our hearts.

These are just a few of the many names of Jesus that barely touch upon all that He is for us. No matter what present we unwrap this Christmas, it pales into comparison to the gift of Christ; our every longing finds our satisfaction in Him.

REFLECTION

  • Of the names of Jesus mentioned in this passage, which one provides you with the most comfort and why?

PRAYER

God, I receive Your great light to awaken my hope and passion for Your life so that it would define my words and actions. I will walk in Your light for healing, strength, vision, and security. Thank you for coming to bring me life. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
