A Picture of Fullness
When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” Acts 7:54-56

Our world constantly clamors for more—more success, more possessions, more recognition—so much so, that finding true fullness can seem like chasing after the wind. Yet, Jesus offers a radically different perspective. He declares, "I have come that you might have life and have it to the full" (John 10:10). But how do we measure this fullness? How do we know if we're truly experiencing the abundant life Jesus promises?
Enter Stephen, a figure often overshadowed by the apostles in the early church narrative. His ministry may seem modest compared to the grand exploits of Peter or Paul, but Stephen's story resonates profoundly with the essence of living fully in Christ.
Stephen's life was marked by faithful service, both in the mundane and the monumental. He didn't seek the spotlight or crave recognition. Instead, he humbly served widows, ensuring they were cared for and nourished. His dedication to this seemingly small task reveals a crucial truth: fullness is not measured by the scale of our actions but by the depth of our obedience to Christ.
Even when faced with hostility and the threat of death, Stephen remained unwavering in his commitment to proclaiming the gospel. His courage in the face of persecution is a testament to the transformative power of Christ's resurrection and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
Stephen's life challenges us to reconsider our metrics of fullness. It's not about the length of our days or the magnitude of our accomplishments. Instead, true fullness is found in wholehearted obedience to Christ, regardless of the circumstances.
Like Stephen, we are called to be fully present and engaged in whatever tasks or trials come our way. Whether it's serving in obscurity or standing firm in the face of opposition, our aim should be to honor Christ in all we do.
In a culture that values hustle and ambition, Stephen's example reminds us that the pursuit of fullness begins with surrender—a willingness to lay down our own agendas and follow Christ wholeheartedly. It's not about striving for success or seeking fulfillment in fleeting pleasures. Instead, it's about embracing the abundant life Jesus offers by living in alignment with His purposes.
