Communities in Schools

Who is Communities in School (CIS)?

Communities In Schools (CIS) works directly inside public schools, supporting vulnerable students and empowering them to stay in school and on the path to graduation. Their trained Student Support Specialists connect students and their families to community resources, including mental health counseling, tutoring, attendance monitoring, mentoring, and afterschool programs. CIS also provides support for the entire school, such as free school supplies, resource fairs, and crisis intervention services.

The Impact of CIS

Last school year, CIS provided free programming and support in New Hanover and Brunswick Counties to more than 15,000 students. Of those students, 1,958 received ongoing case managed support.

  • 99% stayed in school

  • 93% graduated

  • 88% improved academically

  • 77% improved their attendance

  • 87% improved their behavior
